Training in cold weather can be dangerous due to muscle tightening. Frequent rewarming reduces the risk of injury

Physical activity can be even more challenging during the cold season. This is because, in cold temperatures, the body requires more of our metabolism to stay warm and the muscles tend to stiffen. Therefore, warming up before training in winter is essential to avoid injuries.
Warming up reduces the chance of injury
The coordinator of the Physical Education course at Faculdade Anhanguera, Professor Audrei Fortunato Miquelote, explains that the most common problems at this time of the year are injuries such as muscle strains and strains, especially in the lower limbs.
“In the fall and winter, warming up the body becomes even more important, as it takes time to achieve the flexibility necessary for the ideal range of motion when we are in cold temperatures,” guides the educator.
According to Audrei, the cardiorespiratory rate increases during warm-up, which stimulates blood circulation (which usually worsens in winter) and prepares the muscles for strenuous activity, reducing the chances of injury.
“To know the ideal time to start the exercises just look at the breathing and heart rate. If they are higher than the rest period, then we can start”, explains the professor. “The preparation must be gradual, so as not to expect too much from the cold body and avoid the possibility of injuries and removals,” he continues.
The pro says 10 minutes of warm-up is enough before doing any sport. Frequent warm-up practice increases joint mobility and the speed of energy release in the body, as well as accelerating nerve impulses, which facilitate movement. “This step is essential to achieve results without harm to health,” Audrei completes.
Precautions before starting
Winter is a great season to abandon a sedentary lifestyle. However, for people who do not exercise often, the teacher warns that it is necessary to be aware of certain factors before carrying out sporadic activities and thus avoid injuries, such as physical conditioning.
“It is advisable to speak to a Physical Education professional before starting these activities and, in cold weather or in open spaces, with wind currents, it is important to protect yourself with warm clothing for thermal comfort,” he concludes.
