10 behaviors to avoid during Carnival

Simple attitudes and responsibility are very important to prevent accidents

Carnival is a time of joy and relaxation, but it is important to remember that some behaviors can turn revelry into tragedy. Often, enthusiastic about the celebrations, party participants do not realize that their actions can cause serious trauma, putting their own lives and those of other people at risk.

It is important to keep in mind that, according to trauma-related health bodies, more than 90% of these incidents could be prevented with simple measures. Discover 10 situations that should be avoided:

1. Breaking traffic laws: risky overtaking and failure to respect road rules increase the risk of serious accidents. “The chaotic traffic during Carnival requires special attention. Respecting the laws can save human lives”, underlines trauma surgeon Bruno Pereira, CEO of Grupo Surgical Serviços Médicos and coordinator of the Trauma Center of the São Luiz Campinas Hospital.

two. Drink before driving: The combination of drunk driving is very dangerous. “Drink driving is one of the main causes of accidents during Carnival, as it reduces the driver’s reflexes, even when he feels he has had little to drink. Use safe alternatives, such as taxis, transport apps or the round driver,” recommends the surgeon.

3. Sleep little and drive: Lack of sleep also impairs your reflexes. “Tiredness increases the risk of accidents. Resting before getting behind the wheel is essential. During Carnival it is very common for people to stay up at dawn and completely change their sleep routine. Even in these situations, the right thing to do is to opt for a rideshare or app-based transportation service,” the doctor advises.

4. Carelessness in places with water: Carelessness in aquatic environments can cause tragedies, especially when alcohol is consumed. “It is essential to respect the signs and supervise children, who must stay at a close distance from the adult, and not just in his field of vision. Furthermore, it is important that an adult is responsible for the child and, obviously, that he does not consume alcoholic beverages. When there are multiple responsible people, one thinks that the other takes care of them and the child ends up being left unattended. In the case of adults, it is essential to respect the warnings about dangerous places on the beaches, pay attention to the indications of the lifeguards and do not enter the water if you have drunk alcohol. Drowning is a common and serious event, but avoidable”, underlines the expert.

5. Going out with strangers: “The party is a time to relax, but safety must be a priority. Avoid going out alone with strangers to avoid risky situations. Violent people do not carry signs with this warning. Here’s another tip: don’t get involved in fights “We never know who we are dealing with, whether the person is armed or not,” advises Pereira.

6. To get drunk: Excessive alcohol consumption increases vulnerability to accidents. “Drunkenness impairs reflexes, decision-making and can cause serious injuries, both in traffic and in other situations, such as on the street, on the beach, etc. In addition, a person can become ill with alcoholism, resulting in a hangover. . .and I’ll miss the whole party,” he recalls.

7. Walking in very crowded places: Large crowds can become dangerous. “Pushing, falls and panic situations are common among crowds. Crowds are very common at roadblocks. I’m not saying not to participate, but it’s important to be aware. Also beware of the heat, which tends to intensify in crowded places, and it can cause serious problems, including fainting”, underlines the surgeon.

8. Not hydrating: Dehydration can cause health complications, such as thirst, headache, weakness, dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, or even a rapid heartbeat in severe cases. “Keep yourself hydrated, especially in intensely hot environments. Water is essential to prevent serious problems”, underlines the expert.

9. Not eating well: “The lack of adequate nutrition compromises the energy needed to face the celebrations. A balanced diet is vital for health during Carnival. Prefer healthy and light foods. Avoid foods that do not come from reliable sources, as they can cause poisoning and other gastric problems,” he recommends.

10. Accepting drinks from strangers and having sex without a condom: “These practices can expose revelers to risks of poisoning and sexually transmitted diseases. Prevention is the best way to avoid serious consequences,” says the surgeon.

“What we notice, in the daily management of hospitals, is that people never think that serious situations could happen to them. Therefore, it is important to have accountability. Carnival is a moment of celebration, in which people are happy, but limits are often not respected”, concludes Pereira.
