Diabetics: what is the importance of physical exercise and how to dose intensity

Today is National Diabetes Day. And, according to the Atlas of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Brazil ranks 5th in the ranking of countries with the highest number of diabetics, behind China, India, the United States and Pakistan. The data also highlight that out of a total of 16.8 million Brazilians, 95,000 have type 1 diabetes.

Medicines and changes in eating habits, although they are the main treatments for the disease, are not the only ones. Regular exercise is also very important. “Diabetic patients can practice any physical activity, as it helps a lot in blood sugar control and therefore it will be possible to reduce the doses of insulin or drugs”, says the Dr. Bruna Manes Laudanodoctor specializing in nutrology and endocrinology.

And the ideal is to follow the recommendations established by the World Health Organization (WHO): practice 150 minutes of exercises per week, alternating between anaerobic training (weight training) and aerobic training (running, walking).

“If the patient has blood sugar checked, exercise helps to maintain control. However, if he is decompensated, the patient can go into ketoacidosis,” he warns.

Don’t train too much

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a decompensated condition of diabetes due to the lack of insulin action, which if left untreated can lead to coma. Symptoms include thirst, frequent urination, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, ketone breathing (a distinctive smell, similar to that of aged fruit), and mental confusion.

So it warns patients with type 1 diabetes why them “They should be more careful with hypoglycemia, which can increase during training. So they should always assess glucose pre-workout and eat right to exercise,” says the doctor.

Comments: Patients with blood glucose above 250 NG / DL and showing signs of ketosis cannot engage in any physical activity. Additionally, individuals whose blood glucose is greater than 300 NG / DL, with or without ketosis, should also be extra careful.
