Hair loss can occur within three months of infection; dermatologists explain the treatment
In the first two months of this year, Brazil surpassed the threshold of one million infection cases dengue. The number represents more than half of the total recorded in 2023. With the prospect of growth in the months of March and April, the Ministry of Health estimates 4.2 million diagnoses of the disease in 2024.
High fever, headache, pain in the joints and behind the eyes, tiredness and red spots on the skin are some of the best-known symptoms of the disease. But a little-known consequence of dengue is the hair loss. “Known as acute telogen effluvium, the process can occur within three months of infection,” warns dermatologist Dário Rosa.
By causing general inflammation in the body, dengue, like Covid-19, leads to a decrease in the activity of the immune system. “In the process of fighting the disease, the action of the immune system focuses entirely on the vital organs,” explains Dário Rosa. “This way, secondary structures such as skin, hair and nails are no longer a priority for restoring health.”
How to treat?
Dengue-related hair loss is usually temporary and occurs from generalized form throughout the scalp, without forming bald patches. The best way to deal with the situation is to ensure adequate recovery, always under medical supervision.
According to dermatologist Anelise Dutra, “the patient should avoid overloading himself with intense physical and emotional activities.” It’s also important to stay hydrated and eat a diet rich in nutrients, such as protein and vitamins, especially A, C, D and E, and minerals, such as zinc, iron and selenium.
Furthermore, the prescription of the most suitable products must be made by a dermatologist. “In this recovery phase, it is important to use shampoos and hair lotions prescribed by the specialist and eliminate aggressive chemicals used in straightening and coloring,” advises Dário Rosa. “To avoid damaging hair follicles, you should avoid tying your hair,” he adds.
