Edith Aquilaresident of King’s LynnTO England, was hospitalized after using an inhalable tanning product called ‘da Barbie‘, during family holidays. At the age of 47, Eagle searched for the product online and paid around £25 (about R$159) for the bottle. The businesswoman, who prefers to avoid makeup, opted for bronzer to achieve a more tanned skin tone.

After applying the spray, Aquila enjoyed the much desired bronze, but the next day he woke up with swelling all over his body and difficulty breathing. Suspecting an allergic reaction, she highlighted the lack of information on the product’s ingredients, highlighting concerns about what she was actually putting into her body.

The tanner contains melanotan, an illegal component in both UK as much as us WE. The suggestion to use the product came from her stepdaughter, Kayla Fox33 years old, who warned about the dangers associated with nasal tanning lotions in means of social communication after the accident.

The case raises concerns about the safety and risks associated with the use of inhalable tanning products, with health authorities and consumers urged to be alert to the potential dangers.

What are the risks of tanning lotion with Melanotan?

Melanotan is a term that refers to a class of synthetic substances related to the hormone melanocortin, designed to stimulate the production of melanin in the body. Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of the skin, hair and eyes. These substances are mainly used for the purpose of producing an artificial tan without exposure to the sun.

Therefore, the use of melanotan and similar products is not approved by health authorities in many countries due to concerns about safety and effectiveness. In some places they are even considered illegal. The use of these products can present significant health risks, including serious allergic reactions, as in the case mentioned above.

Camila Salazardermatologist at Les Peauxhe said in an interview with Marie Claire that melanotan is a synthetic peptide that promises to increase the synthesis of melanin in the body. However, its use poses health risks. The substances contained spray they spread throughout the body once absorbed, which is not regulated for intranasal use.

“They can cause everything from local events, such as inflammation and respiratory tract infections, to systemic events, such as gastrointestinal changes, kidney failure, and rhabdomyolysis. There may also be an increase in libido and an increase in the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, which favor the appearance of skin cancers”, explains the dermatologist.
