With their talent, strength and sensitivity, women have conquered more and more space in professional kitchens.

More and more often, women have conquered their well-deserved space in professional kitchens. The challenges are many. They range from hard work, with tasks such as carrying a lot of weight and spending hours and hours in the hot atmosphere of a kitchen, to the double shift, which involves looking after children and the home, but we agree that this is a reality of the women who occupy the labor market in general. In spite of everything, the fact is that women have lent their talent, willpower and sensitivity to the management of restaurants. Next, check out some female-run addresses in the capital of Sao Paulo.
Although women have gained prominence around the world, gastronomy is still dominated by men. Proof of this are awards such as The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, an award that elects the best restaurants in the world. The most recent ranking, from 2021, has only three restaurants run by women among the top 50 in the world: 21st Hiša Franko, by chef Ana Ros? (Slovenia); the 46th Leone, by chef Leonor Espinosa (Colombia); and the 48th Atelier Crenn, by chef Dominique Crenn (USA).
Also on the list is chef Janaina Rueda, who runs the 17th A Casa do Porco (in fact, the only Brazilian on the list) together with her husband, chef Jefferson Rueda, as well as chef Pía León, who, together with her husband, chef Virgilio Martinez, directs the 4th Central (Peru) – and for the same award he won the award for best chef. The women of gastronomy also have a long way to go, but they get there.
