Suicide is a serious public health problem that affects individuals worldwide, regardless of age, gender or ethnic origin. Recognizing the warning signs can be critical to helping someone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts. While not all signs are obvious, being aware of certain behaviors and verbal expressions can save lives.
Below are some of the most common signs that may indicate suicidal tendencies.
Verbal expressions of desperation
Phrases such as âI can’t take it anymore,â âIt would be better if I weren’t here,â or âThings will never get betterâ can indicate a negative outlook on the future and despair.
Social isolation
Avoiding friends, family, and social activities can be a sign that someone is isolating themselves emotionally. Isolation can increase feelings of loneliness and hopelessness.
Behavior changes
Significant changes in behavior, such as irritability, aggression or apathy, may indicate poorly managed internal distress.
Personal inattention
A sudden change in personal hygiene or overall appearance could be a sign that someone is becoming disconnected from basic self-care.
Increased substance use
Excessive use of alcohol, drugs, or medications can be a form of self-medication to deal with emotional pain.
Donation of personal items
Giving loved items, such as valuables, can indicate a desire to say goodbye and a lack of concern about the future.
Expression of the feeling of being a burden
Feeling like you are a burden to others or undeserving of love or support can indicate low self-esteem and hopelessness.
Look for ways to commit suicide
Searching the Internet for methods of suicide or acquiring means to do so, such as firearms, can be an alarming sign of suicidal intent.
Episodes of impulsiveness or aggression
Impulsive behaviors, such as driving dangerously or getting into fights, may indicate a lack of concern for one’s safety.
Farewell expression
Messages or actions that appear to be a final goodbye, such as visiting friends and relatives for no apparent reason, should be taken seriously and help sought immediately.
Pay attention to the signs
If you notice these signs in someone you know, it’s important to act compassionately, offer support, and encourage them to seek professional help. Listening carefully, validating the person’s feelings and making sure she knows she is not alone can make a difference.
Also, encourage her to seek help from mental health professionals, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, or suicide prevention hotlines. Remember, always take suicide threats or signs seriously and seek professional help immediately. Appropriate support and intervention can save lives.
