How to properly place a rug in the kitchen: 7 tips from interior designers

“The ideal place for a kitchen rug will not be as obvious as in the case of a living room or bedroom. However, there are general rules that should be kept in mind, because the kitchen “is a living room like any other,” says interior designer Kara Childress

Here’s how to properly place a rug in the kitchen, according to professionals: choose the ideas that you like.

Before deciding where to place a rug in the kitchen, you need to decide whether you need one or more. Interior designer Annie Burrows says there are good reasons to choose the second option. “Rugs tend to become disproportionately expensive as they get larger, so two smaller mats would be a wiser choice. Additionally, you can combine them by implementing different design ideas using a rug in the kitchen,” she says.

It is also worth taking into account the functional location of the carpet in the kitchen: it requires regular care and the smaller the carpet, the easier it is to put it in order. “A smaller mat is easier to move and fits in a standard washing machine,” says Annie. And finally, a little underlay fits anywhere, meaning you can protect the floor from wear and tear in any high traffic areas – this is particularly important in the case of wood and natural stone.

When it comes to a rug in the kitchen, the ideas should be not only spectacular, but also practical. According to designer Hannah Lee, one such solution is to place the rug under the furniture. “In a small space, having a movable island or center table is incredibly practical: you can always remove it if you need more space. However, furniture can damage the floor when moved, and textiles solve this problem by providing the necessary protection,” she explains.

But this is not the only advantage of this option for placing a rug in the kitchen. Stylish solutions, says Lee, are also very important, and a spectacular decoration on the floor in the center of the room will become an eye-catching detail and create a cozy atmosphere. “How to choose the size of a kitchen rug when you are going to put something on it? Follow a simple rule: it must be 30 to 60 centimeters wider than the piece of furniture on each side and 90 to 120 cm longer,” advises the designer.

According to interior designer Christine Renée, one of the biggest mistakes in organizing space with a rug in the kitchen is placing it close to the walls. “Rugs need space, otherwise they will steal it. Lay the rug near cabinets or appliances and the room will feel cramped and small,” she says.

Zoning is one of the most popular techniques among professionals, and in order to achieve the desired effect, you can use a rug in the kitchen. In this case, the owner of the design bureau Ginger Curtis advises to establish rules depending on the material: for the kitchen area, choose a washable carpet, in the recreation area, lay a high-pile carpet, which increases the level of cleanliness; comfort.

“Remember that it is very important to understand how to combine the carpet with the interior of the kitchen. When you combine foods of different qualities and textures, you need to find something in common that brings them together. You don’t have to go for identical patterns, but think about details, like colors, to complement those already in the room,” adds Ginger.

Using a rug is a great way to warm up a space and make it more interesting, but scaling errors can have the opposite effect. “The best kitchen rug design advice I can give is to choose one that is visibly longer than the island or cabinets. When the difference is a few inches, it looks like a fluke “, explains interior designer Linda Eyles.

According to Linda, long curtains work the same way as ceiling-to-floor curtains. “If you have a centerpiece – a table or an island – it breaks up the room and makes it appear smaller. A rug in the kitchen can solve this problem. A good solution in this case is to choose the length. This will draw the eye deeper into the space, making the room appear larger and adding more texture and color,” she explains.

“So you have a kitchen rug. How to choose a place for this? The same rule will apply as in other rooms: place it in the center – this solution will be the most balanced. But keep in mind that the center is not always determined by the intersection of the diagonals, because design is closer to art than to the rules of geometry. For example, you might have a key item in a room. In this case, place the rug so that it leads to that element,” advises interior designer Cara Childress.

“When it comes to placing a rug in the kitchen, practical advice makes a huge difference,” says interior designer Meredith Owen. “You need to be comfortable, so you need to create a functional and comfortable environment where you can cook and communicate with your family members with pleasure.”

Meredith recommends placing the thickest mat in front of the stove: a soft, comfortable surface will take the pressure off your feet, making cooking marathons more enjoyable. “It’s a very simple rule: determine the place in the kitchen where you stand the most and add padding there,” explains the designer.

For the sink area, Owen advises choosing something thin and made from a material that dries quickly and doesn’t retain moisture for long. For a coffee corner, according to her, both soft carpets, on which it is pleasant to put your feet, and spectacular solutions made of any materials that decorate the kitchen are suitable.

But the main thing, Meredith says, is to remember that the space should please you. If you want a rug in the kitchen, its bed will fill the room with warmth that can warm your feet and please your eyes.
