OR correct disposal of condoms it is essential for public health and the environment. While it is important to dispose of waste properly, there is not yet a sustainable way to do so latex in condoms can take up to 600 years to decompose in nature.

Recycling experts consulted by Earth claim that condoms end up becoming waste after being used. This means the material could end up in landfills or landfills.

For these experts, what matters is that companies think about materials that decompose more quickly, since condoms have to be thrown in the trash. The plastic mixed with metal in the packaging makes it difficult to recycle, but it is the only part that can be reused in some way.

How to throw away the condom?

The most recommended thing is that condoms are thrown in the bathroom garbage. After use, tie a knot, like a balloon, to prevent the contents from spilling out and throw it in the garbage. You can also wrap the condom in toilet paper if you want to be more discreet.

Please note that, Under no circumstances should a condom be thrown down the toilet. This can cause serious blockages in the plumbing system.

And the packaging? Is it recyclable?

According to Saville Alves, partner and business leader at SOLOS, a recycling company in Salvador, Bahia, condoms are sold in multilayer packaging, composed of more than one type of material.

“In this case three types of plastic and a layer of aluminium, similar to the packaging of snacks, biscuits and chocolates. This makes the recycling process more difficult, as we do not have enough technology to separate them. The few cooperatives that work with this type of material end up being concentrated in the south-east, where there are some pilot programs focused on the recovery of this type of material,” he explains.

Alves says the main challenge is separating the metal material from the plastic. Subsequently the material needs to be stored for a long time so that the weight becomes sufficient for sale, being very light.

“Today there is no profitability linked to the recycling of this material, now it is important to understand what other materials could be used, guaranteeing the safety and durability of the product, and that it can also have better recyclability rates,” he claims.
