It will take more than 134 years to achieve full gender equality, as the pace of progress on the inequality gap remains slow, falling by 0.1 percentage points compared to last year, the World Economic Forum’s annual gender gap report finds .

Using data from LinkedIn, the paper shows that hiring of women for leadership positions began to worsen, falling from 37.5% to 36.9% in 2023, and continued to decline in early 2024 at 36.4%, below 2021 levels.

“The slow progress made in hiring women for leadership roles is now starting to fade from its peak in 2022. Women have been disproportionately affected by the global economic slowdown, reinforcing the systemic problems that hold them in place of work work,” said Sue Duke, vice president of Global Public Policy and Economic Chart at LinkedIn.

“We are reaching a watershed moment as AI [Inteligência Artificial] Generative technology is starting to impact the job market with changes in the skills companies value most. Employers must ensure they apply a gender perspective to their approach to training to create the workplace of the future in a fair and equitable way.”

Gender gaps are slowing women’s economic progress. The World Bank estimates that closing the gender gap in employment and entrepreneurship could increase global GDP by more than 20%.
