Can I have a green roof on my house?

Expert comments on the aspects to consider to ensure a beautiful and safe roof

There are four technical prerequisites that must be verified before starting to mount an ecological roof, according to Sérgio Rocha, executive director of Studio Cidade Jardim. Are they:

Rainwater drains: any roof must be equipped with drains (channels or gutters) sized according to the contribution area and local rainfall - the basic rule is the same as when the slab is exposed, i.e. do not let water accumulate . The green roof covering system must not negatively interfere with runoff, to avoid overweight and poor development of plants.

Waterproofing: Since all currently available models are permeable, the attic or roof must be fully waterproofed, watertight and leak-tested. If the idea is to grow a lawn or shrubs, it is essential to use a blanket with root protection at the base.

Overload: to avoid risks it is necessary to determine what the weight of the green roof will be when it is completely saturated with water and with the vegetation at its maximum growth limit.
