Know the symptoms and causes of intestinal obstruction

Intestinal obstruction is a blockage of intestinal transit, which causes annoying symptoms and carries serious health risks.

Intestinal obstruction is a common problem, with over 150,000 cases each year in Brazil. The condition is characterized by the blockage of intestinal transit, which can cause uncomfortable symptoms and, depending on the severity, require surgical treatment.

“Intestinal obstruction is a condition in which the passage of food, gastrointestinal secretions, feces and gas is blocked by some mechanical factor. The main causes are tumors, adhesions/bridles, volvulus (twisting of the intestine, for example) and hernia,” explains gastroenterologist Eric Pereira.

Additionally, the condition causes symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal distension;
  • Nausea;
  • Vomiting (including stool);]
  • Stopping the elimination of gas and feces.

“Complete intestinal obstruction is usually preceded by milder symptoms, such as intestinal subocclusion. Distention, pain, nausea, and changes in bowel habits (diarrhea and/or constipation) are less severe,” says the gastroenterologist.

Health risks

It is important to note that intestinal obstruction carries a high risk of perforation and therefore a risk to life. “It usually represents a medical surgical emergency,” says the specialist.

Eric warns that once the obstruction is established, it is usually irreversible and requires urgent surgery. Therefore, prevention involves early diagnosis of possible causes.

“Patients should therefore seek medical attention as soon as they have a complaint, as the specialist will be able to determine whether it is something mild or whether it will require more invasive investigations,” he stresses.
