Black, orphaned, grandson of slaves, Umbanda and father of five, Grande Otelo challenged structural racism by immortalizing his characters in film and television, paving the way for future generations of black artists.

The film focuses on the subject Sebastião Bernardes de Souza Prata, this is the name of the artist, and is conducted by him, in first person, from a collection of over 300 hours, including rare images from the archives, at the Cinemateca Brasileira and in several others in Brazil and the United States.

“I like to imagine Othello as an Exu, an orixá who paved the way for black people to be here today, working with art and culture in Brazil, including myself,” explains the documentary’s director.

The film participated in several national and international festivals, such as Mostra de S. Paulo, Human Rights Culture Festival, Roda Sesc de Cinemas Negros, and had its international premiere at the Blackstar Festival in the United States, considered the Sundance of black cinema.
