Can painkillers really be addictive?

Understand why it is important to use medicines only under medical advice

Can painkillers really be addictive?

Yes, depending on the painkiller, it can be habit-forming or addictive. In the United States, for example, opioid derivatives, powerful painkillers, are now responsible for one of the world’s largest addiction epidemics.

Many Americans turn to opioid derivatives for pain relief at some point in their lives, when they are recovering from a fracture or surgery, and often become addicted to the drug.

Even the very common painkillers that we use here in Brazil, if the person starts to use them too frequently, can change our pain threshold, that is, the same dose of medicine can have a worse and lesser effect in reducing the pain of a possible headache (cephalalgia), for example.

Therefore, it is recommended to always use painkillers under the guidance of a doctor, for a limited period of time, and never to prolong or start taking a drug on your own without your doctor’s knowledge.
