Late in the afternoon of Tuesday, September 10, the Ministry of Tourism released a statement confirming what everyone already knew: Brazil is beautiful and home to some of the most impactful landscapes on the planet.

According to the Ministry, in fact, the country is consolidating itself as a cultural and natural destination with 24 sites recognized as UNESCO heritage sites, which places it in first place in all of South America.

Among the 24 Brazilian heritage sites recognized by the international organization, 15 are cultural, such as the iconic Historic Center of Salvador (BA), the architectural complex of Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte, (MG) and the historic city of Ouro Preto (MG).

These heritage sites are in addition to the other seven considered natural, such as Iguaçu National Park (PR) and Fernando de Noronha (PE).

The updated UNESCO list also includes two mixed heritage sites, which combine culture and nature, such as Paraty and Ilha Grande and Sítio Roberto Burle Marx, all in Rio de Janeiro.

From time to time, this United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization updates the list by incorporating new sites that meet its rigorous selection criteria.

The most recent update was in July 2024, when 24 new sites were added, bringing the total to 1,223 World Heritage Sites, spread across 168 different countries, such as the very Brazilian Lençóis Maranhenses.
