Jordan Chiles Speaks Out For First Time On Olympic Medal Controversy: ‘Who Are They’

The American gymnast Jordan Chile received an honorary bronze medal on the stage of VMAthis Wednesday (11). The athlete presented the award for best collaboration, given to Taylor Swift and Post Malone, for the hit “Fortnight”, from the album “The Tortured Poets Department”.

However, Jordan Chiles also took home a prize. That’s because, after losing the bronze medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics, due to a controversial decision, Flavor Flav gave her a medal of honor.

For the first time since the event, the American spoke about what happened. Before the VMAs, she attended Forbes’ Power Women’s Summit, where she became emotional recalling what happened. “The biggest thing that was taken away from me was the recognition of who I was. Not just my sport, but the person that I am,” said.

Jordan Chiles went on to say that what happened was not because of his medal, but because of the color of his skin. “It’s about the fact that there were things that led me to this position as an athlete. I felt like everything was taken away from me. I felt like when I came back in 2018, when I lost the love for the sport, I lost it again. I feel like I was really left in the dark,” said the athlete.

Why did Jordan Chiles miss the medal in Paris?

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Jordan Chiles lost his bronze medal at the Paris Olympics following an appeal by Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, accusing the judges of the women’s artistic gymnastics final of having accepted the appeal to correct Jordan Chiles’ score after the time allowed by the rules.

Thus, the Olympic Committee accepted the Romanians’ appeal, reassigning the medal from the Chileans to Barbosu.
