“A squirrel has more freedom than women and girls in Kabul”said the award-winning actress Meryl Streep in a parallel debate at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The aim was to give greater visibility to the issue. Indeed, it worked, as it generated a great deal of coverage in the world press.
“A bird can sing in Kabul, but a girl cannot, and a woman cannot sing in public,” said the Oscar-winning actress.
“I think the international community as a whole, if they came together, could bring about change in Afghanistan and stop the slow suffocation of half the population,” he added.

In August 2021, women and girls lost the rights they had already gained with the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. It initially sparked a wave of international outrage. Subsequently the topic stopped dominating the news and fell into oblivion.
