Summary

Addiction to online betting games affects people of all ages and social classes. Overcoming the compulsion involves recognizing the problem, setting clear goals, seeking support, developing healthy habits, and monitoring progress.

Addiction to online betting games has become a growing concern in modern society, affecting people of all ages and social classes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 2 million Brazilians are addicted to betting.

The survey carried out by the Brazilian Society of Retail and Consumer Affairs (SBVC) indicates that addiction is already one of the major causes of debt in the country. In this case, 63% of bettors say that their family budget has already been damaged by this practice.

Furthermore, addiction leads to harm in the social, academic, professional life, and mental and physical health of individuals. Overcoming this type of compulsion requires a gradual and conscious process, which involves recognizing the problem and adopting effective strategies to regain balance.

Anderson Santos de Jesus, psychologist at the Psychological and Psychopedagogical Support Center of the Faculdade Santa Marcelina, presents five steps to help those who want to free themselves from this type of addiction. According to him, the process involves everything from recognizing and accepting addiction, to creating new habits and strengthening emotional resilience, offering a balanced and effective approach to regaining control over your life and finances.

1. Recognize the problem

Playing games for long periods of time, often ignoring other activities or responsibilities;

Feeling irritable or anxious when not playing;

Trying to control or reduce playing time without success;

Using games as a way to escape problems or negative feelings;

Neglecting relationships, work or studies because of gambling.

2. Set clear goals

Set realistic goals to reduce playing time. For example, start by reducing one hour a day and gradually increase it;

Replace play time with other healthy activities such as exercise, free time, and/or spending more time with friends and family.

3. Seek support

Talk to friends and family about your problem. They can offer support and help during the recovery process;

Consider seeking professional help, such as a psychologist or a gaming addiction support group.

4. Develop healthy habits

Establish a daily routine that includes physical, social and productive activities;

Practice mindfulness or meditation to reduce stress and improve concentration;

Make sure you get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet.

5. Track your progress

Keep a journal to record your progress and challenges;

Reward yourself for achieving specific goals, such as reducing gaming time or developing new hobbies;

Be patient and persistent. Relapses may happen, but the important thing is to learn from them and move forward.
