Renovating a house or apartment may seem challenging and expensive, but with good planning and smart strategies, you can transform the space without compromising your budget. Instead of looking for properties with mirrored, pre-determined plans, building from scratch or facing the challenges of renovation, you can adapt the space to meet the needs and preferences of residents in a sustainable way.
GT Building’s project and customization coordinator, Letícia Abreu, shares 5 practical tips for saving money on renovations, ensuring a beautiful, functional and environmentally friendly environment. Check it out below!
1. Planning
Before starting any renovation, planning is essential. Set a realistic budget, do research materials and suppliers and choose qualified professionals. “It is important to establish a clear plan and follow it strictly to avoid unexpected events. A detailed project is also essential to ensure that all changes happen as planned, without financial surprises,” explains the coordinator.
2. Walls and floors
This is another point to consider. “Change the wall color It is an economical and effective way to renovate an environment. Painting in modern tones or investing in wallpaper gives agility to the process and also gives personality to the space”, says Letícia Abreu. She also suggests integrating environments, such as the living room and kitchen, which offer greater versatility in decoration and optimize the use of space.
As for the floor, although changing it can be more laborious, it is a great way to revitalize the environment. “To save money, you can choose floors that are easy to install, such as vinyl or laminate, which can be applied over the existing covering, avoiding breakage and removal of the old floor. Another alternative is to opt for coverings that combine them in different environments, creating harmony throughout the house,” he suggests.
3. Trade details instead of making big changes
Small adjustments can transform the environment without requiring large investments. For example, replace doorknobs, handles and switches with modern models. Improve the lightingChanging old light bulbs for more efficient versions or using lamps and sconces to create ambiance is also a great option.

4. Creative decoration
Decorating is a great way to personalize a space in a cost-effective way. “Mirrors are ideal for enlarging rooms and improving lighting. Paintings and photos with simple frames can also transform the look, giving more personality to spaces. In addition, plants are a convenient and effective option to liven up the environment , improving air quality and making the environment more welcoming”, advises Letícia Abreu.
5. Sustainable reform
For those who want a sustainable renovation, Letícia Abreu suggests some alternatives such as water-based paints or ecological ones, since they are a safer and more sustainable choice. Eco-friendly paints, composed of natural ingredients such as linseed oil, clay, beeswax and mineral pigments, are biodegradable and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), preventing the release of toxic substances into the environment; Flooring made from recycled materials, such as PVC and laminates that imitate wood, are good alternatives.
If a flooring made of wood, it is possible to renew it by sanding it and applying paint, saving on replacement and taking advantage of the material already present; water-saving toilets and taps contribute to a more sustainable renovation, reducing the waste of resources; LED lighting uses up to 80% less energy than incandescent lamps and has a long useful life, making it a sustainable and economical option; and finally, investing in materials such as thermal blankets, double glazing and reflective paints can significantly reduce energy consumption, keeping the environment comfortable and reducing the need for heating or cooling.
