Even on the nicest team, there may be a few less pleasant people. What if you’re not going to quit because of them, but you clearly don’t need the extra stress? Let’s talk.
We all know these types: the frenzied talker who can’t be trusted with any information, the chatterbox who stops you from concentrating for a minute, or that same coworker who gets upset about everything and immediately spills all his negativity on those who surround him, even if they have nothing to do with it.
How to behave in such a company? Here are 4 rules that will make your daily life easier and help you resolve conflicts.
1. Be respectful
No matter what happens, keep your cool and communicate with everyone respectfully. Of course, this can be a challenge in reality, especially when difficult colleagues ignore your approach and are always happy to cross boundaries.
However, avoid gossip and ridicule – don’t stoop to their level. This way, you won’t be able to reproach yourself for anything, you won’t give in to provocations and you won’t give their childish behavior more attention than it deserves. Believe me, these guys are just waiting for your explosion, so calm is a more powerful weapon here.

2. If possible, change your office location.
Sometimes it is wiser to leave the “battlefield” for your own peace of mind. If an annoying colleague is sitting next to you, then it is quite difficult to ignore his behavior, no matter what tricks you resort to. Find out if it is possible to move to another table to keep contact to a minimum. You can always explain your decision by the necessity of the work: perhaps your new workplace simply has better lighting or a more airy room? This seems plausible.
3. Speak simply
Don’t give up on negotiations. After all, suppressing problems has never helped resolve conflict.
It is best to discuss with a colleague in private so that the person does not feel obliged to justify and defend themselves in front of witnesses. Stay objective, calm and don’t be personal. Of course, the success of such a conversation also depends on the ability of a person, in principle, to perceive criticism and opinions of others, but even if a colleague reacts rather perplexed and even abruptly to your comments on At the moment, the conversation can still make him think about his behavior.
4. Don’t be afraid to go to your boss
If you have already tried all the options and your difficult colleague does not even think about changing, continuing to test your nerves, then do not hesitate to discuss this with your manager. We often hesitate to “wash dirty linen in public”, considering it meanness, but in fact, it is a completely mature and balanced approach. After all, it is in everyone’s interest (and first and foremost your boss) to increase the team’s productivity. And it will certainly not be high if conflicts are brewing inside and the atmosphere is poisoned by the toxicity of relationships. Especially if an unpleasant coworker is affecting your mental state, it’s time to report it. Here it is also important to remain as neutral and objective as possible; you should not complain like an offended child, but reasonably explain why this is bad for the overall results.
