A Sao Paulo artist profits from a painting dating back to the New Year’s Eve episode
THE New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro was marked by a scandal: 30 men were caught during a libidinous activity in the Pedra do Arpoador, in the south of the city. A video, titled “Surubão do Arpoador”, was sent to the Félix Pacheco Identification Institute, where facial recognition technology was used to try to locate the people involved. However, the low quality of the images made it impossible to proceed with the trial.

“With the video we received, the identification work has already begun and finished. The images are of very poor quality and are not suitable for a facial comparison report,” said Alexandre Trece Motta, director of the Institute, to the journalist Ulisses Campbell, by O. Globo.
Far from the police archives, the event took on artistic contours. The visual artist Carlo Cuna33 years old, from Sao Paulo, painted a canvas inspired by Intimate group act. The work, which measures 30×20 centimetres, bore the title In Arpoador and combines current references with impressionist influences. Less than 24 hours after completion, the piece sold for R$1,600 to a Brazilian homosexual couple residing in New York, in the United States of America.

Currently, Charlles is working on a second painting inspired by the Arpoador scandal, which has already been created purchased by a journalist from Sao Paulo for R$ 2,400. The higher price is due to the larger dimensions of the new work, which measures 30×40 centimetres.
“My art explores videos and images from the Internet, creating new narratives and recording the ephemeral through painting. I am interested in the body and overexposure, themes that dialogue with what I consider relevant in society. When I watch the video ‘surubão’, I wanted to document and give new meaning to the scene beyond digital”, explained the artist.
According to article 233 of the Brazilian Penal Code, the Committing an obscene act in a public place or collective space is a crimewith a sentence of three months to one year in prison. The 14th Police Station (Leblon) investigates the case.
