Preeclampsia: Understand Lexa’s diagnosis and its possible complications

Singer Lexa is hospitalized in Sao Paulo after receiving a diagnosis of preeclampsia. The artist is six months pregnant with her first daughter Sophia, born from her relationship with Ricardo Vianna.

Lexa had pre-eclampsia – when pre-existing high blood pressure is diagnosed or worsened during pregnancy – and can cause placental abruption and premature birth.

“The severity is when the patient suffers from eclampsia, which is a convulsive crisis,” explains Dr. Mário Macoto Kondo, coordinator of the high complexity obstetrics department of the Hospital and Maternidade Santa Joana.

Macoto says the exact cause of preeclampsia is not yet known, but that several factors, such as problems related to the patient’s immunity, could be linked to the diagnosis. The condition occurs starting from the 20th week of pregnancy.

How is preeclampsia diagnosed?

The absence of symptoms in some women is what makes diagnosis difficult. The doctor points out that this is why prenatal care is so important during pregnancy.

Ideally, according to him, the examination should be carried out at least once a month. “The patient will have her blood pressure measured and will therefore be able to detect some changes,” he emphasizes.

The symptoms manifest themselves in a “subtle” way most of the time. Macoto explains that the main ones are: sudden weight gain, swelling of the hands and face, headache, vision changes and shortness of breath.

What to do after being diagnosed with preeclampsia?

Mário Macoto emphasizes that the treatment of the disease depends on the severity and period of pregnancy. The disease is called early preeclampsia before the 34th week of gestation and late preeclampsia after the 34th week.

In many cases, blood pressure can be controlled through medications. The main drug administered for this condition is magnesium sulfate. “It is a protection for newborns and women, it especially helps the neurological side of the mother,” explains Macoto. (*With information from Estadão Conteúdo)
