This hit Western series on Netflix may be getting a second season, but not quite in the way we imagined

Online on January 9, At the Dawn of America managed to unseat Squid Game from the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched TV series after a few days. Still, it’s a bittersweet success for the platform, as the program was enough for a six-episode first season.

The idea for a sequel quickly came up, especially with series director Peter Berg. He set his terms for discussing Season 2, realizing that he wanted to continue exploring the world of this Twilight Western. The program update is not yet official, but everything is already on track.

The series director has more ideas

In a new interview The Hollywood ReporterPeter Berg spoke about his interest in a prequel rather than a sequel: “At the moment we are in full discussion (…) this is the direction we will take, I don’t know yet if it will be like this or not, but it is in any case what we want to do.

Therefore, American Dawn Season 2 will be designed as a prequel centered around Isaac Reed, the character played by Taylor Kitsch. It is not surprising, since the Canadian actress is the muse of Peter Berg, who cast her in the TV series Friday Night Lights, but also in several of his feature films (notably Battleship and Blood and Tears).

Why doesn’t Peter Berg want to make a sequel?

In addition to wanting to work with Taylor Kitsch again (which he wouldn’t allow to continue due to his character’s fate at the end of Season 1), the American director also explained why it would be difficult to film. Season 2, designed as a sequel to the first:

One of the challenges involved Sean and Preston, the actors who play Dew Luns and Devin (…). We had to stop filming for five months and Preston was back in mid-puberty a few inches taller, his voice had changed and he was starting to grow chin hair.

In order to maintain a credible story justifying the sudden rise of the two performers, it would therefore be necessary to jump back in time several months. Otherwise, the casting of these two characters would have to be changed. Peter Berg argues for this reason “more interesting” to explore the series’ past rather than its future.

It remains to be seen if this spin-off series will take the form of an official Season 2 or if it will go under a different name. For example, the American night, if we imagine what can precede the dawn. Either way, Netflix subscribers will no doubt be there for this prequel, which we can only hope will see the light of day!

The western mini-series American Dawn is available now on Netflix.
