The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in many homes and is responsible for preparing the food we eat. For this reason the area must always be clean to avoid the proliferation of bacteria and fungi.
Proper cleaning of utensils and surfaces ensures food safety and helps prevent disease.
Invisible villains
Several studies indicate that some kitchen items deserve special attention, as they contain a large number of microorganisms.
The five samples of this contamination are:
Bin: Place for organic waste disposal, requires frequent cleaning and should ideally be operated by foot pedal, avoiding manual contact. Experts advise against using garbage cans in the sink, due to the high risk of contamination and attracting insects.
Sponge: In constant contact with water, food residues and grease, the sponge becomes an environment conducive to the proliferation of bacteria if used frequently to wash dishes without daily cleaning with soap and water. Weekly changes are essential, especially when you notice color changes or the presence of residue.
Drain: Discharge point for water and waste, dirt and microorganisms accumulate in the drain. Regular cleaning with specific products and bleach is recommended.
Sink cloth: Similar to a sponge, a sink cloth traps moisture and residue. It is important to wash frequently with water and detergent, followed by complete drying. Replacement should occur when you notice stains, tears or a dirty appearance, preferably after each use, although the frequency may vary depending on your needs.
Tea towel: In direct contact with utensils and food, the tea towel accumulates humidity and residues. Daily change and separate washing with hot water and soap is recommended. Drying in the sun, using an iron or a dryer helps eliminate microorganisms.
Cleaning routine
Kitchen cleaning should be a consistent, daily practice, including the sink and food handling areas to avoid dirt buildup. Heavy cleaning, such as removing furniture and appliances, washing walls and floors, should be done at least once a week.
