Researchers highlight the connection between late-night media consumption and hypertension in young and middle-aged adults




A study from Hengshui People’s Hospital in China identified a significant relationship between watching videos late at night and increased blood pressure. Published in the scientific journal Public Health BMCthe survey analyzed data from 4,318 people, collected between January and September 2023, and concluded that the more time spent watching these videos before going to bed, the higher the risk of developing hypertension.

The survey highlighted that participants who spent more than four hours a night watching the videos were 40 percent more likely to have high blood pressure than those who did not. Overall, the study had 2,425 men and 1,893 women, an average age of 32.7 years.

“It’s not just screen time of concern,” the authors explained to the paper The south first. “These nocturnal habits lead to sedentary behaviors, sleep disturbances, and increased sympathetic nerve activity, which can increase blood pressure.”

Experts have also highlighted other factors that can contribute to hypertension, such as high-sodium diets, obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes and family history.

According to socialbakers, 62% of Brazilians prefer to watch videos that last up to 3 minutes, such as the popular reels of Instagram or Tiktok. Between funny skits, curiosities and practical advice, this practice has become a common habit.

Lifestyle changes can help minimize the negative impacts of this habit. Researchers recommend following a routine with a balanced diet, regular physical activity and adequate hours of sleep. Taking these measures may be essential to maintaining heart health and avoiding future problems.
