Water with lemon: better fasting or another moment of the day?

Many people have a habit of drinking water with fasting lemon early in the morning and believe that there are health benefits. The fruit is rich in vitamin C, which is a natural antioxidant and protects cells from oxidative damage.

According to nutritionist Marina Mansur, if consumed with water, especially in the morning, it can stimulate the production of digestive enzymes. “They prefer the digestive process and help to absorb some nutrients, in addition to hydration,” he explains.

Better to drink lemon water with or without fasting?

Dr. Isolda Prado, director of the Brazilian Nutrology Association, states that there is no scientific evidence that demonstrate an exclusive advantage of the consumption of fasting water.

“However, for some people, it can help in hydration. If considered possible discomfort, it can cause gastric irritation in people with sensitivity, gastritis or reflux”, he warns.

In general, lemon can be consumed at any time as long as the person tolerates well. “If there is discomfort, it is preferable to eat it together with food,” adds Dr. Isolda.

Marina explains that “people with gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux or sensitivity to acid foods should be cautious, since lemon can irritate the gastric mucosa and worsen the symptoms”, warns the professional.
