According to Dr. Sergio Rouhmann, head of the oncological service of the Moinhos de Vento (RS) hospital, when a tumor recurrence occurs, tests are performed to detect the site and the extension of the recurrence. If cancer returns after the initial treatment, this means that the cancer cells had already spread, hidden and not detectable at the time of the initial diagnosis and has resisted this treatment.
Cancer cells can escape the original intestinal cancer by means of lymphatic and blood vessels and reach the lymph nodes and other tissues in the body. This gave rise to recurrence in the lymph nodes and peritoneum, which were described by the singer.
“The injury of the ureter is generally derived from peritoneal lesions. Everything means that systemic treatment will be necessary to try to eliminate all these residual cells, which are apparently growing in different locations. Sometimes surgery can also help in this picture,” says the oncologist.
What is metastases?

“We have tests that are performed on the material of initial surgery or in a new biopsy. This will define whether the treatment will be based on immunotherapy or chemotherapy. We have other treatments called organic, which depend on molecular tests. Fortunately, the treatment alternatives have increased in recent years,” says the expert.
