“I had prostatitis to tell the men who have so foolish. I am almost dead, to get an idea. I had surgery, I am superb. I have to take an examination of the prostate, because otherwise, I will do the same, my prostate has swallowed and I had to undergo surgery,” said Neto.
But what is prostatitis?
It is an inflammation or an infection that occurs in the prostate, a male gland of the size of a walnut located under the bladder and close to the rectum.
The disease usually affects more adult men and, more rarely, pre-adolescent and young. José Carlos Truzzi, supervisor of the contagious emergency discipline of the Brazilian society of urology, explains that in younger patients prostatitis can be secondary to a hiles “, an inflammation in the urethral causes by an infectious agent generally acquired by sexual activity, then an agent of a sexual transmission disease”.
When the patient has a higher age group, prostatitis is associated with prostate evil or partial retention of the urine, which provides bacterial growth.
There are different types of prostatitis, the most common is caused by bacteria, in particular Escherichia coli, responsible for many urinary tract infections. It occurs from an infection (it has occurred in the urethra or in the rectum) which ends up migrating towards the prostate or when the bacteria arrive directly through the blood flow.
When prostatitis appears suddenly, it is called acute bacterial. Symptoms include high and sudden fever, general malaise, chills, low pain and perineum (region between scrotum and anus). The patient can feel pain during urinating, the need to urinate more often than normal or even a difficult desire to keep the pee. There is also a difficulty in completely emptying the bladder due to pain during urination.
In cases where it remains insensitive, it is known as chronic bacterial prostatitis. This has a more difficult treatment, it occurs due to the permanence of bacteria which causes the disease in the liquid produced by the prostate despite the treatment with antibiotics. Without fever, it can still cause pain in ejaculation and exit in the blood in sperm, but in some cases it may appear and disappear, which makes diagnosis difficult.
José Carlos also underlines that depending on gravity there could be a greater general loss: “It can lead to the evolution of the sepsis, to more widespread and more serious paintings.”
To make the diagnosis of prostatitis, it is necessary to perform consultations Doctors and exams, which include the collection of urine and, sometimes, the liquids expelled from the prostate. Sometimes it may be necessary to perform multiple exams to exclude other possible causes for symptoms.
How is the treatment?
The treatment is performed through antibiotics. In acute prostatitis, lasts from 14 to 30 days; In addition, only two types of patients need hospitalization: those who have to make an intravenous treatment and those with intense urine obstruction.
In chronic prostatitis, antibiotic treatment takes more time, ranging from 3 to 12 weeks. Most patients with chronic prostatitis improves with antibiotic treatment, but sometimes the symptoms are returning and the treatment should be restarted.
When pharmacological treatment does not work, it is recommended to go to surgery.
How to prevent?
Simple hygiene habits can prevent prostatitis. “If it is connected to sexual transmission infections, the use of condoms and measures that are careful not to acquire Ist, they will help reduce the possibility of this age group,” says José Carlos.
Each man after his 40 years should participate in his urologist to evaluate the prostate, also to verify the emergence of cancer soon, facilitating the treatment. José Carlos recalls that there is no relationship between the two diseases. “Cancer is the development of a tumor in an area different from that in which prostatitis usually occurs.”
Some men develop chronic prostatitis even without the presence of bacterial infection. Its most common symptoms are similar to bacterial prostatitis. Non -kissing prostatitis and prostitutinia (or chronic pelvic pain syndrome) have no fully known causes. Since there is no infection, treatments are performed to relieve symptoms, they are usually aimed at promoting prostate relaxation.
“So the relaxation measures of the physiotherapy and pelvic floor help to improve symptoms. But usually pain relievers and some medicines that facilitate the emptying of the bladder tend to help reduce these symptoms,” concludes José Carlos.
