Understanding what parotitis causes and how to avoid it
Pumpkin is an infectious disease caused by the Virus of the Paramyxoviridae family, belonging to the genus Rubulavirus. The transmission can take place through the air through the breathing droplets or when the person infected sneezes, the word or the cough.
Another way to contract the virus is through direct contact with the saliva of the infected. That is, the sharing of tools such as glasses and cutlery that have come into contact with infect saliva can lead to an infection.
Ralcyon Teixeira, infectious and director of the Brazilian Society of Infectology (SBI) explains that there is no specific therapy for parotitis. “It is usually a benign disease and the treatment consists in supporting support for each symptom presented. Analgesic drugs and hot or hot compresses for the edema parotid are beneficial. The main form of prevention is vaccination.”
Through the Unified Health System (Sus), every Brazilian, from 12 months to 59 years old, can immunize against the disease. Public hospitals offer triple viral vaccine, which in addition to the protection against parotitis, also acts against Rosalia and measles.
The vaccine can be taken for 12 months and the child should receive two doses: one at 12 months and one at 15 months of age. Adults who have not been vaccinated can go to the closest health place to receive both doses, with a 30 -day break.
The vaccine is contraindicated for pregnant women, people with immune impairment or those who have already presented an allergic reaction to some components of the vaccine. In addition, it is important to avoid close contact with infected people, do not share food, drinks, cutlery and other objects and wash your hands with soap and water more often.
