The ancient Salmon studios reveal important signs on the stability and recovery of marine ecosystems
It is common – and correct – discard the foods that pass from the expiry date. But for scientists, these old packaging can reveal much more than you think.
This is the case of researchers from the University of Washington, who analyzed the canned salmon cans developed between 1979 and 2021, with the goal it was to understand the conditions and environment from which these fish came.

The study aimed to better understand the conditions and the environment from which these fish came. As they opened the cans, the researchers found Anisakides, marine parasites that were surprisingly perfectly preserved on the package.
These organisms play an important role in the food chain and act as indicators of the health of marine ecosystems, allowing to monitor changes over time. “Anisakides’ presence is a sign that fish on the plate comes from a healthy ecosystem,” explained Chelsea Wood, one of the research managers.
The analysis of cans has revealed that the presence of these parasites has increased over the years, suggesting a stable or recovery environment. According to experts, this growth can also be related to climate change and the increase in the population of marine mammals in the region.
