The research showed initial results in animals and small groups of volunteers
Summary
Brazilian Ufrj scientists have developed Polylaminine, an experimental protein that has already shown promising results to recover movements from celesty lesions, pending anvisa approval for clinical use.
A Brazilian discovery can transform people’s lives with spinal cord injuries. A group of scientists from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Ufrj) presented this week a study that uses Polylaminine protein to stimulate nerves to restore part of the lost movements.

The research, favored by the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation of Amparo for research in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Faperj), is still in the experimental phase. However, it has repercussions all over the world as an unprecedented hope in medicine.
How does it work?
The drug, produced in the laboratory, is based on the laminine, a natural protein that forms a large shirt during the embryonic phase and helps communication between neurons. When we reach adulthood, this protein becomes rare in the body. Scientists found that it is possible to recreate it in the laboratory, extracting the protein from the placenta.
With this, polylaminine is applied directly to the spinal cord during a surgical procedure. It forms a sort of mesh that guides the reconnection of the neurons, restoring the communication between the nerve cells, according to Faperj.
However, there is an important detail. The treatment consists of a unique surgical application at the point of the lesion, usually within 72 hours of the accident, increasing the possibilities of recovery. But progress in studies indicate that in the future people paralyzed for years can recover mobility.
Promising results
The study has already recorded significant movements of movement in all voluntary patients who have received the drug. With the definitive authorization of Anvisa, the drug should be available in Brazilian hospitals and become part of the medical protocols to take care of the victims of the trauma.
