In the haste of everyday life, we are looking for quick solutions to everything, even for cooking. But some “tricks” can be more harmful than useful.

Recently, a Spanish butcher became viral to Tiktok claiming to be able to defrost the meat in just five minutes using salt, vinegar and water. The problem is that this method is not sure – and science explains why.

What did the butcher say?

Mariano Sánchez Tiktaker, known as El as CarniceroHe has published a video ensuring that it is possible to defrost minced meat in “five minutes on the clock”. The technique consisted in filling a pan with water, adding a little vinegar and a pinch of salt, moving well and placing the frozen meat inside an airtight bag.

According to him, the reaction between salt and vinegar would increase the water temperature, accelerating the process without damaging the meat. But science shows that it is not entirely like this.

Why doesn’t make trick work?

Vinegar is nothing more than an acetic acid solution in water, while common salt is sodium chloride. When they dissolve, they release ions, but they do not react together to generate heat, the experts explain to the newspaper El Español.

In practice, the dissolution of salt in the water is an endothermic process, that is, it absorbs heat instead of producing. Result: the water cools slightly instead of warming up. Therefore, this method does not accelerate the defrosting and can still compromise the quality of the meat.
