Find out how to choose the best variety for your beds and pots

There are thousands of different colors and types of camellias to choose from, so you can be sure there is a perfect one for you. The earliest flowering varieties are mainly from the Sasanqua group, ranging from white to pink and dark red and can be single or double flowered, formal, peony or anemone. And some are even scented.
Once you learn how to grow camellias, maintenance is simple. Most, including the more widely available hybrids C. japonicas and C. x williamsii, need moist but well-draining acidic soil.

And while the plants themselves are hardy, making them a fab choice for brightening up the colder months, the flowers can be damaged by severe frosts and cold winds. For this reason, it is important to plant them in a sheltered place. They also love the dappled shade, which mimics their natural habitat on the edge of forest clearings.
With so many different types of camellias to choose from, which one to choose for your garden? If you are not sure, we are here to help you, pick up some varieties:
1. Camelia sasanqua

This is the only hybrid variety full of joy. The bright red, lightly scented seedlings shine with a yellow center and contrast with the clean, small foliage. If you’re looking for new conservatory plants, this one should definitely make the list, but it needs more sun than most to ensure prolific flowering in season.
2. Camellia ‘silver anniversary’

‘Silver Anniversary’ is a semi-double camellia of the japonica variety. It has large, rather irregular, candid white flowers with golden stamens in the center. The deep green leaves provide a striking contrast.
3. Camellia x williamsii ‘yellow of the jury’

The branches of this williamsii camellia sport a row of wide white outer petals with a ruffled mass of small creamy yellow petals with a white tip in the center. The type grows neatly and upright and is known as one of the best flowering shrubs for winter.
4. Camellia japonica “margaret davis”

A japonica beauty with peony flowers, “margaret davis” is white with pinkish-red edges, occasional red flecks, and a golden glow in the heart of each. This is another elegant, upright species, so it’s a good choice for your small garden ideas.
5. Black lace

This wonderfully symmetrical red hybrid displays a subtle silver shimmer and a hint of black around the edges. Another compact and vertical type, it looks great alone or grouped with others of the same type for visual impact. It will offer flowers in the spring.
6. Desire

This type of camellia japonica can be a little moody, but it’s beautiful at best. Its petals vary from white in the center to pink in the oldest petals. The species itself has strong growth.
7. Adolfo Audusson

‘Adolphe Audusson’, a japonica camellia, has a red color with a golden core. Try growing it in a large pot as part of your patio gardening ideas for a nice pop of color.
8. Narumi-gata

This sasanqua camellia has white flowers with soft shades of pink around the edges. Select the variety for conservatory ideas.
9. Ruby wedding

Bright red and dense, vertical growth, this camellia has a beautiful peony-like shape. Another good choice for container gardening ideas.
10. Spring Festival

If you are looking for camellia types that offer tons of flowers then Spring Festival is an excellent choice as it features masses of tiny pink blooms. Plant them for a whimsical setting.
11. Mrs. Campbell

With a deep pink, Ms. campbell will give you plenty of double-headed flowers. Fix it in a partial shade place, in a large pot, or in your garden with other species.
12. Yellow brush fields

Grow the creamy white type to become the center of attention. An interesting fact about these beauties is that the flowers are edible – the petals can be used as a garnish or dried and used in Asian cooking.
