SP removes the mandatory mask in public transport

With the new standard, the article becomes mandatory only in health institutions such as clinics, laboratories and hospitals

The use of face masks in public transport will no longer be mandatory in Sao Paulo starting from Friday 9. The decision is valid for the State and the capital, where the mandatory protection was implemented in December 2020 to contain the advance of the coronavirus.

With the provision, hospitals, clinics and health facilities are the only places where the use of the mask is still mandatory in the state. In the case of public transport it is only “recommended”, especially for people aged 60 and over and for those who are immunosuppressed.

In a joint note, the state government and São Paulo City Hall announced that the measure was adopted based on data and recommendations from the Management Board of the São Paulo Department of Health Sciences, Research and Development (SCPDS), whose members formed the first Scientific Committee formed to tackle the pandemic. Just last month, the National health surveillance agency (anvisa) suspended the obligation of the article in all airports and aircraft in the country.

In Sao Paulo, the announcement was based on the observation of the epidemiological scenario and, mainly, on the vaccination coverage against the coronavirus. Today the state has 90.7% of the entire population with the first dose and over 88% with the full primary vaccination schedule (two doses or single application).

“The State of Sao Paulo has achieved a fantastic coverage rate in the vaccination campaign against the new coronavirus and has protected its population, especially against severe cases of the disease. As a result, hospitalizations and deaths have plummeted,” said the lover. infectious disease specialist David Uip, São Paulo Secretary of Health Science, Research and Development. “This gives us the confidence to make the use of masks more flexible at this time, but we will remain vigilant, constantly monitoring epidemiological data.”
