Gaining weight quickly after losing weight is common in restrictive diets and can be a sign of the accordion effect; to know more

Following a restrictive diet and then gaining weight can be quite frustrating. However, it’s not uncommon, you know? And gaining those extra pounds after weight loss also has a name: is the accordion effect!
So, the link between this concept and the more restrictive diets is precisely in this cut carbohydrates – proposal of most of these menus. According to Dr. Walid Nabil Ourabi, a weight loss specialist, this cut gives the false impression that you have lost weightwhen, in fact, that lost weight wasn’t fat, just water.
“This happens because, when we remove the carbohydrates, we also end up removing all the nitrogen stock from the muscles, which is expelled into the water and, therefore, we lose weight”, explains the professional.

That way, when you allow yourself to break out of that eating routine and eat something different, like a barbecue on Saturday afternoon or even a bigger breakfast on Sunday, you feel like you’ve gained all the weight you lost during the week.
“After a useful week on a restrictive diet, when carbohydrates are ingested, the body draws water into the muscle – the one expelled in the previous days. So naturally, the weight goes up, ”Walid considers.
Avoid the accordion effect
Therefore, to avoid this common frustration of the accordion effect, the expert leaves some tips:
- Don’t cut out carbohydrates entirely, even on weekends;
- Do not abandon the diet on rest days;
- When faced with extra pounds, remember that it’s just water and keep up with healthy habits;
- Before going on a diet, consult a professional on the subject.
