The brand allegedly used the image of Botticelli’s painting without authorization
The Uffizi Galleries, a Renaissance museum located in Florence, Italy, are suing the brand of French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier for unauthorized use of the image of the most famous work in his collection, “The Birth of Venus” , by Sandro Botticelli.
In a statement, the Florentine museum said that the house had appropriated the image of the masterpiece to create pieces from one of its collections, but had not asked for permission or paid the royalties required by law.
The galleries say they have asked the brand to withdraw the pieces from the market or to get in touch to “finalize a commercial agreement necessary to heal the abuse committed”. However, according to the Uffizi, the request was “substantially ignored” by Gaultier.
“We have already initiated a legal action which provides, in addition to the removal of the ‘illegitimate’ clothes, also a request for compensation in favor of the museum”, reads the note. “The Birth of Venus” is the most famous painting in the Uffizi collection, a museum that receives more than 1.7 million visitors a year. .
