The disease has a 95% chance of cure if diagnosed early. Know the signs of oral cancer
It is the week of mouth cancer, which runs from November 1st to November 7th. Since the disease is more frequent in the male population, the theme returns in Blue November, a campaign created with the aim of raising awareness on prostate cancer, but which ended up becoming a month to promote men’s health in general.
According to estimates by the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in 2020 there were 15,190 new cases of oral cancer, 11,180 men and 4,010 women. According to the coordinator of the Dentistry course at Faculdade Anhanguera, Professor Marcelo Palinkas, behavioral habits may contribute to a higher incidence of cases among men than among women.
This is because, among the risk factors for the disease, alcohol and tobacco are the ones that most affect the oral cavity and the lack of sun protection causes complications on the lips. “Treatment must take place daily and the dentist’s role is essential in preventing oral cancer,” warns the specialist.
Importance of early diagnosis
Even in the early stages of the disease, symptoms are difficult to identify without the help of a professional. Therefore, many cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, which puts the chances of recovery at risk. According to the Federal Council of Dentistry, patients have a 95% chance of recovery when the case is discovered at an early stage. In the developed frames, the percentage drops to 45%.
Dental professionals are in direct contact with the oral cavity of the population and are able to quickly identify problems, says the professor. “The visits to the dental office must take place with a minimum frequency of six months”, recommends the professor. In cases of recovered patients who have already undergone treatment, the interval decreases and the follow-up must be carried out every three months.
Symptoms of mouth cancer
Faculdade Anhanguera professor points out the signs that may indicate the existence of a tumor in the mouth:
- White spots and patches on the tongue, cheeks, or roof of the mouth
- Cracks and lesions of the lips (thrush) that do not heal for more than 15 days
- Hoarseness;
- Presence of nodules (nodules) in the neck.
