Domenica Petista underwent surgery to remove the leukoplakia from her vocal cords; the biopsy performed during the procedure had already indicated that there were no signs of malignancy
Detailed examination of the removed vocal cord lesion of the president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) confirmed that there was no cancer in the region, revealed a Stage doctor Luiz Paulo Kowalski, head and neck surgeon a Syrian-Lebanese hospital who is part of the team accompanying the petista.
Lula underwent surgery on the larynx on the night of Sunday 20, days after receiving the diagnosis of leukoplakia, a lesion characterized by a white mass that appears on the mucous membranes. Since the president already had cancer in the region in 2011 and there is a risk of leukoplakia turning into a malignant tumor in 10% of cases, the medical team considered it appropriate to remove the injured tissue for analysis and prevention .
The wound was examined while the president was in surgery, sort of “real-time” biopsy. through which the pathologist gives his opinion in a few minutes. In Lula’s case, no signs of malignancy were found in this preliminary examination, but, as usual, the material was sent for the traditional examination, in which a more detailed analysis is carried out.
The result, released on Monday evening, ratified the initial opinion. “Confirmed benign lesion. No signs other than intraoperative diagnosis,” said Kowalski, who is also a professor of head and neck surgery at the U.S. School of Medicine. University of Sao Paulo (FMUSP).
Recovery
According to the surgeon, during his convalescence, the president will not have to abuse the use of his voice for a few days and will have to undergo speech therapy sessions for at least two weeks. “He should be on voice rest, but he can speak normally, attend meetings and talk on the phone. What he cannot do is exaggerate, strain himself, shout in speeches, talk for a long time, because this can hinder healing ”, explains the specialist.
“He can continue to participate in transition activities. This will not interfere with anything, he will be able to express his opinion on decisions. But he will have to be more of a listener in order not to force his voice so much,” adds the doctor.
Speech therapy, Kowalski explains, will help the president use his vocal cords “peacefully and without too much effort”, especially in this period of recovery. He should start the sessions this Tuesday the 22nd. That’s what the doctors expect Lula’s hoarseness improves after the recovery period🇧🇷
In addition to post-operative care, Lula will have to undergo tests for five years to monitor the possible appearance of new lesions. “You should undergo periodic laryngoscopy. At first it will be with an interval of three to four months. After a year, the period between examinations may be longer,” comments the doctor.
