Dislocation: Understanding one of the most common injuries in soccer

Dislocation is a very common type of injury in soccer players. There are several types, but patellar luxation is the most common injury in sports. Knee, foot, and ankle dislocations are rare events, especially in sports.

The doctor. Moisés Cohen, doctor at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, specializing in orthopedics and traumatology, knee surgery and sports injuries, explains the main differences between the types of dislocation.

patellar luxation

The kneecap is the bone at the front of the knee, also formerly known as the kneecap. Participates in the knee deceleration mechanism. “Dislocation occurs when the kneecap loses contact with the rail on which it slides and is out of its natural location. It can be caused by traumatic events from impact or rotational movements”, explains the doctor.

Certain factors can contribute to the occurrence of this type of injury. This is the case, for example, when the track where the patella runs is higher and, therefore, is located in the shallowest part of this track. The “X” shaped knee (genu valgum) and ligament laxity also play a role.

“Along with patellar luxation, there is usually a tear of the patellofemoral ligament, which sits inside and helps hold the kneecap in place. Sometimes, when it slips out of place, the cartilage also hurts. because it has the impact of the cartilage of the patella. patella with the cartilage of the femur”, adds the specialist.

Treatments may initially be non-surgical. However, when the lesions become repetitive, surgery is the best indication.

Knee

Knee dislocation is a very serious event, says the orthopedic surgeon. “It happens when the joint completely loses contact, that is, when there is a rupture of practically all the ligaments, or at least three or four important ligaments are torn and the knee loses its congruence, loses contact,” he explains.

This happens in severe injuries, such as automobile and motorcycle accidents, when the knee hits the car’s dashboard or steering wheel. There is always a need for surgery to rebuild the ligaments and stabilize the knee, informs Dr. moises.

Feet

This injury occurs when the bones in the foot lose contact and is relatively common when you have a very severe foot sprain. There are several bones that maintain contact with each other and lose this connection due to the rupture of the ligament that unites them, explains the orthopedist

“This generates a lot of pain, deviation from the alignment of the foot and, in general, a procedure to put the foot back into position is indicated. Eventually, if it is unstable, a surgical procedure may also be necessary”, specifies the specialist.

ankle dislocation

It also happens in high-energy trauma, when a twist occurs, causing injuries to several ligaments. This causes the talus bone (located under the tibia) to come out of the ankle clamp.

According to your doctor, this dislocation in the butt may or may not follow a fracture. “The ligaments and the capsule that covers them end up breaking and the injury can occur due to several factors,” he adds.

important to remember

“All dislocations are emergency injuries and must be implemented as quickly as possible in order not to damage the articular cartilage that covers the bones. More definitive treatments are then carried out,” warns the trauma specialist.
