The expert gives advice to those who want to lose weight
Weight loss diets and treatments don’t work the same for everyone due to several aspects, including metabolism.
Metabolism is a set of reactions in our body that allows us to capture and transform food energy for body functions and maintenance of life, according to endocrinologist and metabolologist Igor Barcelonasspecialized by the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology.
“Some factors contribute to the decrease in basal metabolic rate, such as aging, nutritional deficiencies, sedentary lifestyle, sleep deprivation, low water intake, low muscle mass and others,” he points out.
types of metabolism
Considering that there are three types of metabolism (ectomorphic, mesomorphic and endomorphic), for a person to have effective results in losing weight or gaining muscle mass, it is essential that he knows which of the categories his body falls into.
The endocrinologist says that, from tests such as calorimetry, it is possible to measure someone’s metabolism. “However, certain formulas that assess the amount of muscle mass can help with this process,” she points out.
- Ectomorph: characterized by an accelerated metabolism. People who rely on it find it easy to burn calories. In general, they have thin bodies, small shoulders, and difficulty gaining weight.
- Mesoform: known as the “middle ground” of metabolism, the mesomorph makes both weight gain and weight loss difficult. These are people who have athletic builds, broad shoulders, and good response to exercise.
- Endomorph: It is the metabolic body type most prone to fat accumulation. They generally have thicker arms and legs, a round body, and trouble losing weight.
Relationship between slow metabolism and weight loss
A slow metabolism can make it difficult to lose weight. Also, when your body is a little slower, fat can build up in new areas, your hair and nails become drier and more brittle, and even with a reduced diet, you still gain weight.
According to the endocrinologist, how these elements are related to weight loss is determined by the energy balance. This means that the body is directly influenced by the total calories consumed during the day and by caloric expenditure.
“In cases where the person consumes more calories than necessary and does not perform activities designed to burn them, the remaining energy is stored by the body. And, when we consume fewer calories and engage in more physical activity, the energy expenditure is higher and we lose weight “, explains.
For patients with weight loss problems, the indication is to undergo a medical evaluation to analyze whether there is the presence of hormonal deficiencies such as thyroid, testosterone and sex hormones, carrying out a replacement operation if necessary.
Physical activity, gaining muscle mass and drinking water are also important for good results.
Another recommendation is to consume more fiber, lean protein and monounsaturated fat, as the body expends more energy to consume them.

“Getting seven to eight hours of sleep a night, consuming foods with caffeine and catechins like green tea, coffee, peppers, and cinnamon also helps,” adds Dr. Igor.
Even if you have a slow metabolism, don’t think about giving up. With medical follow-up, you can improve the quality of your food, making calorie expenditure greater than consumption.
“However, there are no forbidden foods. There are only those that should be eaten in the least amount possible, such as processed foods, fried foods, sweets and more,” concludes the doctor.
