3 diseases that most affect dogs

Veterinarians explain how to treat and prevent these problems in females

Throughout their lives, dogs can have all sorts of health problems. Some diseases, however, are more common or affect only females. According to veterinarian Kelly Moura, mammary, uterine and urinary tract infections usually affect females more.

Some diseases tend to affect only females

“In the case of breast infection, the main reason is the decrease in the mother’s defenses after delivery, i.e. she is vulnerable to infectious organisms. In addition, this vulnerability can also be a consequence of psychological pregnancy,” explains veterinarian Andréia Massua .

According to Kelly Moura, the cause of uterine infection is the same as for breast cancer and psychological pregnancy, that is, a hormonal disorder. She clarifies that this disease usually affects bitches from the age of five. Regarding urine infection, the vet comments that the main reasons are poor water intake, urinary retention, unbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle and natural aging.

Symptoms of these diseases

It is important for the tutor to keep a close eye on the symptoms to identify the disease and start treatment as soon as possible. According to Andréia Massuia, the signs of a breast infection they are diarrhea, listlessness, malaise, hardening and discharge in the breasts, and refusal to nurse the puppies.

Regarding uterine infection, he comments that the main signs are lack of appetite, weakness, vomiting, fever, presence of vaginal and breast discharge, increased water consumption and excessive peeing. “Urinary infection, in turn, presents symptoms such as difficulty urinating, abnormally colored urine (with blood in some cases), fever and lack of appetite,” says Andréia Massuia.

treatment options

Despite being common, these three diseases can be treated, which guarantees the women’s health and well-being. In case of breast infection, the treatment is based on the implementation of water compresses to relieve pain and reduce swelling. In the most serious cases, the most suitable intervention is to drain the mammary glands.

To the infection uterus, Kelly Moura explains that the treatment is the same castration operation, which will remove the uterus and ovaries from the bitch. After the surgical process, if the infection is active, antibiotics will need to be used. The urinary tract infection, in turn, according to the vet, is treated by administering anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.

form of prevention

According to Kelly Moura, both breast and uterine infections are prevented through the castration process. The only exception is clutter urinary, which can occur whether the animal is neutered or not. “Prevention of urine infection goes through hygienic habits, dietary changes and incentives to drink water,” she concludes.
