In Recife, more than a hundred people have sought treatment for eye symptoms after using styling pomades
While doing her hair to enjoy a carnival preview this past weekend, in Recife (PE), dental student Hellen Lyra didn’t imagine that she would momentarily lose her vision due to the use of a hair product. “I could not see for a few hours. After that, my vision became blurred as if I had a cover over my eyes,” said the young woman with her left eye still quite sore this Monday afternoon, 6.
He was one of 69 people admitted to the ophthalmological emergency department of the Altino Ventura Foundation (FAV), in the capital of Pernambuco, who reported problems with their eyesight after using hair styling pomades. At two other private ophthalmologists, belonging to the same group as Altino Ventura, about 80 people reporting the same problem were treated.
According to the press office, almost 40% of visits made in the last two days are related to eye irritation due to the use of these products. Applied to the hair to style the hairstyle, the pomade melts with heat and mixes with sweat, reaching the eye contour.

“We have observed a significant and worrying increase in the number of doctor visits in our emergency department by patients complaining of photophobia, watery eyes and intense eye discomfort after using hair styling pomades,” reported ophthalmologist Kayo Espósito, administrative medical deputy director of AVF.
“We lead the population to stop using these agents immediately. Since it is a chemical trauma, depending on the extent and time of exposure, it can lead to irreparable sequelae in the cornea,” she warned.
At the moment of desperation, Hellen had the help of her boyfriend, even to walk. “It is very distressing to think about the possibility of losing your sight,” she confesses. “Too annoying. Do not use these ointments. There were burns, but it didn’t damage other important parts of my eye, which could happen,” said the student, who had to resort to three medications, as well as compresses on the eye, as recommended by the ophthalmologist.
