‘PS I Love You’: Gerard Butler ‘almost killed’ Hilary Swank in accident on set

“PS I Love You” is one of the most tender romantic stories and one of the movies that help to deal with the grief when a couple dies. However, on the real-life shoot, tragedy struck.

Whether it’s an action-packed movie or a romantic movie, accidents can happen on set, as happened to Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank in the 2007 film.

In the 2007 drama romance, Holly (Hilary Swank) falls in love with Jerry Kennedy (Gerard Butler), who dies prematurely, although she leaves him letters on his birthday instructing him to enjoy life.

In the first scenes of the film, Holly and Jerry’s relationship is shown to make the audience understand the great affection and love that the couple had.

It was in one of these scenes, where the pair are together, that Gerard Butler hurt his co-star Hilary Swank. The actor recounted on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on January 24, 2023 what the experience was like.

Speaking about fun facts or behind-the-scenes stories from his movies, Butler revealed that he “almost killed” Swank in “PS I Love You” when he was filming the bedroom scene where he dances in his underwear and suspenders.

“Remember the scene where I dance and wear a bra? I shot that scene for a day and a half and I had to dance like an idiot on suspenders. At one point, the clip, which was an alligator tooth clip, was caught on TV as I’m crawling over to her (Hilary Swank) and she’s right in front of me, laughing hysterically.”

The scene is a comedic moment in the film, as Jerry wants to do a sexy dance for Holly, but one of his suspenders comes undone and hits him square in the face. Only when recording things didn’t go as expected.

“The cameras had these plastic shields to cover that pin because it had to come loose and go (fly) in front of my face. So I crawl over to the bed, it sticks, it loosens, it flies over my head, it hits her in the head, it cuts her in the forehead, you could even see the teeth of the pliers.”

The actor, now 53, who also remembers leading the cast of “300,” said the injury was so severe that Hilary Swank had to be taken to the hospital while he was left alone on the set to cry about what happened.

“Imagine the recording studio, and within three seconds, everyone’s gone, and I’m sitting there in my boxers and my boots and a pair of socks and I started crying. ‘I just tagged Hilary Swank!’ myself for two days and that’s what I have to show.”

Luckily, Swank’s injury didn’t get worse and he made a full recovery to finish shooting the movie, plus he didn’t resent or blame Butler for what happened.
