The world was not ready for M3GAN, the killer doll whose comedy-tinged horror film took the box office by storm and caused a stir among moviegoers. With his wry tone and instant hit new horror star, M3GAN — orchestrated by James Wan, written by _Malignant’_s’ Akela Cooper, and directed by Gerard Johnstone — was murderous in more ways than one. It didn’t take long for Blumhouse to confirm a sequel, and the studio head is quick to reassure fans that there’s a lot more in the tank for M3GAN’s new shenanigans.
“James Wan is one of the most creative and imaginative people I know,” says Jason Blum. Empire Next the Mandalorian Season 3 issue confirming that ideas are already flowing for M3GAN 2.0. “He’s an idea machine, and as we were finishing the film, he had about seven different ideas for what could be next.” While the end of M3GAN –SPOILER WARNING – saw the initial doll bite the dust, it was strongly hinted that she was uploaded (in true AI style) to the World Wide Web. How she chooses to wreak havoc next time (and how she bounces into the iconic body that l ‘made a new horror icon instantly recognizable) it’s up to the creatives.
But above all they are taking their time to work on the second film, which will only hit screens in January 2025. “We have to write a script. I mean, you gotta give us some time,” laughs Blum. “The creative process suffers when [rush]. You pretend not to compromise, but you do it anyway. So he wanted to give us enough time to make the movie great, and now we have it. And we have the whole crew coming back, we don’t need to hire a writer or a director, all these people are in place. When it comes to a character like M3GAN, we’re not just talking about making a sequel, it has to be an update.
