Life isn’t always easy when you’re a teenager, and the age of social media doesn’t help matters. You have to take your image, compare it to others, ignore the comments… But when, above all, an evil app decides to ruin your existence, it’s hell. In Rose Red – not to be confused with Rose Red, the Stephen King mini-series – this concept becomes the common theme of eight rather chilling and smoothly executed episodes.

It all starts with the tragic death of a student who is targeted by this digital entity. In just one scene, the audience is immersed in the world of the red rose. The tension is there, the atmosphere has its effect and makes you want to see more. Six months later we meet Rochelle. While celebrating the end of his exams with his friends, he discovers a strange app. This is the beginning of his worries.

A young woman must make three wishes, written on a mirror with lipstick. His wishes seem to come true, but in return he must undertake a series of challenges that undermine his friendships. If he refuses, the app will charge him.

While staying true to the horror codes and in particular SlasherRed Rose manages to capture the attention of its audience. The teenage characters do not always avoid the usual clichés, but remain attractive, complex and above all believable. The real originality of this series lies in the presence of this threat, invisible but very dangerous.

Red Rose claims to live up to its high-tech concept. It has to be said that before the Netflix label, this fantasy comes from the BBC and it is felt in many things, especially in the development of the protagonists. With its thrilling moments and nineties soundtrack, it’s no wonder the series enjoyed little success.

The Red Rose is available on Netflix.
