What is a sitcom?


Called situation comedy in Portuguese, sitcoms are successful with audiences. In this article we tell you everything you need to know about them.

Some comedy series have been so successful that they have ended up marking a generation and also a way of making humor. They are called sitcoms, a term that comes from English and means situation comedy, or situation comedy, in literal translation. This expression refers to productions that use facts that happen in everyday life to make fun.



In general, the narrative focuses on ordinary situations such as love affairs, problems at work, conflicts between friends, among other problems that can happen to anyone. Good examples of successful sitcoms are those in the USA, produced in the 90s such as Friends, That show from the 70samong others.

What characterizes a sitcom?

In addition to being series about everyday life, sitcoms have other surprising characteristics, such as having short episodes of about half an hour each, fixed scenarios and audience participation. By participation I mean laughter and applause that contribute to the rhythm of the episodes.

It’s also important to remember that sitcoms appeared in the UK, around the 1940s, with a production called Pinwright’s progresswhich only lasted one season, but was important in dictating the rules that would be attributed to this style of comedy.

In Brazil, we also have examples of popular sitcoms, including Get off the bottomscreened between 1996 and 2002 and recorded in a theater in Rio de Janeiro, e The large family aired between 2001 and 2004.

Both the United States and other countries have produced several successful sitcoms. We list the main ones for you at the marathon.

how I Met Your Mother

 

Launched in 2005, how I Met Your Mother has attracted public attention because it has been compared to the Friends, although the two have different storylines. In the series, architect Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) tells his children about how he met their mother.

From this story we are guided by his memory, and we know something more about his love affairs and the relationship with his friends Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).

Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, the series has won over a legion of fans and its ninth (and final) season aired in March 2014. In 2022, however, it premiered How I met your fathera spin-off produced by Hilary Duff and Stewart Halpern, which can be watched Star+.

The office

 

One of the most popular sitcoms of the last decade is The office, a series that portrays the daily life of an office in Scranton, Pennsylvania. With acid humor, the plot shows the day-to-day life of each of the employees and how they relate to each other and to manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

With an edgy cast, the production also features John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, among others. The nine seasons are available on Netflix. The two seasons of the UK version can be watched HBO Max.

modern family

With 11 seasons in total, modern family appeared in 2009 and soon became a huge hit, being nominated for several Emmys and other awards.

Created by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, the storyline follows three family groups that are part of the same family. On the one hand there is Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), the patriarch who is married to the Latina Gloria (Sofía Vergara) and lives with his son Manny (Rico Rodriguez).

On the other are Claire (Julie Bowen), the daughter of Jay, her husband Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) and their children Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould), three children who soon become troubled teenagers.

Finally there is also Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), the youngest son of Jay, who lives with her husband Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) and their adopted daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).

Abusing absurd situations, modern family has become one of the most popular sitcoms of recent times. If you want to watch it, you can now press play Star+.

Working moms

 

Another sitcom that is definitely worth giving a chance is the Canadian one Working momsOR supermoms as it is also known. Set in Toronto, the story tells the story of four mothers and friends trying to balance their personal and professional lives with the challenges of caring for their children.

Created by and starring Catherine Reitman, the series cleverly satirizes the challenges mothers face in balancing careers and motherhood.

In addition to Reitman, Dani Kind, Jessalyn Wanlim and Juno Rinaldi complete the cast. Currently the six seasons are available on Netflixand the seventh (and final) should be coming soon.

Friends

 

It is impossible to talk about sitcoms without mentioning Friends, a series launched in 1994 that has marked several generations and is still enjoying success with the public. Originally broadcast on NBC, the storyline follows the lives of six friends; Rachel, Ross, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey.

With totally different life stories and ways, the group became inseparable even as they faced quarrels and intrigues. Over the seasons, we see the friends mature and learn to relate lovingly, as well as stand up for what they believe in.

Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the production received several awards, as did its stars, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc.
