When we talk about bears in cinema, we can clearly identify three categories. First of all, bears in flesh and blood, whether they are quite menacing – as in the 2008 horror film The Beast, which combines young criminals in rehabilitation, a serial killer on the loose and angry grizzly – or rather friendly, like the two bears in the film of the same name. Released in 1989 by Jean-Jacques Anna, a little orphan boy meets a lonely adult man from whom he learns about life.
Then comes the bears in the animated version, and the examples are obviously numerous. One of the first that comes to mind is the debonair Baloo from The Jungle Book, rubbing his back against a tree and shouting the famous “it doesn’t take much to be happy”. We can also think of Winnie the Pooh, born in the 1920s from the imagination of the writer Alan Alexander Milne and fifty years later brought to the big screen by the Disney studios.
And finally there are the teddy bears, which, as fiction dictates, are often given life and speech in film. This is the case of the now famous Ted, who appeared in the 2012 film of the same name, which breaks the couple created by Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis. Indeed, the young man and the stuffed animals act like big kids, chained to watching couch-bound and drinking parties, much to the displeasure of Lori, John’s girlfriend.
You will find these different categories in this quiz dedicated to this beautiful animal on World Bear Day. So it’s up to you and watch out for scratches!
