Warner Bros. Discovery, operator of HBO Max, has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Global for the exclusive rights to broadcast “South Park”, a famous cartoon series. According to the media conglomerate, Paramount broke a deal and would divert production content to its own streaming service, Paramount+.
Filed last week, HBO is seeking more than $200 million in damages in the lawsuit, which claims Paramount tried to “unfairly take advantage of Warner HBO by violating its contract and stealing its content.”
HBO also points out that South Park didn’t bring back any extra episodes for season 24 at the time, and even delivered fewer than the agreed upon episodes. Warner accuses South Park Digital Studios and MTV Estúdios de Entertainment (Paramount channel) of conspiracy.
Paramount CEO Robert Bakish reported an increase in subscribers following the release of the films. South Park The Wars Stream (2021) AND Streaming wars part 2 (2022), among other growth fields (such as finance). For HBO, the profits from streaming were earned at its expense.
To the EngadgetParamount said the lawsuit is “meritless” and that it is still honoring its contract with Warner, despite the company not paying the licensing fees for episodes already delivered.
“South Park” is an animated series that satirizes society’s situations and concepts with acid humor. It is one of the longest running shows in TV history, having aired for 26 years.
