“Here, I tell Babette, I tell her . . .”
If it probably remained insignificant to the vast majority of viewers who heard it resonate in the 8th season of The Simpsons in 1997, this line spoken by Bart to Lisa was able to question some special fans who know the world of the series like your fingers.
Do you remember… the scene happened in St The Mysterious Travels of HomerEpisode 9 of the eighth season. After talking to Coyote in a hallucinatory trance induced by taking some very strong pepper, Homer returns home in search of his wife. He then briefly barges into the kitchen and interrupts the discussion between Lisa and Bart, who then states – and twice – the response quoted above.
But who was this mysterious Babette (named Mabel in the original version)? Since no character with this name has appeared in the series, many fans may be wondering. Was this a sharp reference to a literary or musical work, since the series always had a habit of falling short in its episodes? Did we miss a subtle wink?
28 years after the episode aired, screenwriter Josh Weinstein took to his Twitter account to answer some fans who may still have questions about Babette.
“The Homer and Chili episode was so dense that we didn’t have a sub-screen with the kids anymore.”she said. “So when Homer asks them where Marge is, nothing happens to them. What they’re doing should be completely unrelated. . Hence the name Mabel (Babeth).
The story behind “I Say Mabel”.
Homer’s story in Chile was so full that we had no room for a B story for children
So when Homer asks them where Marge is, they have nothing. Whatever they do at that moment should be 100% free
Hence, Mabel

The screenwriter continues his explanation and specifies that this name, chosen completely at random, therefore did not refer to anything in particular:
“(…) There are no more copies associated with this Mabel, either before or after. (…) And to be clear, as people often ask, this Mabel line is not about anything else. He never appeared in a book or movie or anything. As far as I know, it is completely independent in human history. It’s one of those lines that owes its charm to its unpredictability.”
Perhaps you were one of the few Simpsons fans who encountered this line. Or maybe not. Anyway, now you know how he was born.
