Japanese Anime: Why Live-Action Adaptations Don’t Work According to Michael B. Jordan

If he is one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood today, Michael B. Jordan is also a fan of Japanese anime. In Paris for his new film Creed III (which he directed himself), the 36-year-old American took part in the famous program of our colleagues Konbini Vidéo Club.

Invited to select and comment on films that inspired him, Michael B. Jordan couldn’t resist visiting the anime section, which gave him the opportunity to talk about the series that inspired him as a director, such as the boxing anime Hajime no Ippo. Or Naruto.

But that’s not all, because the latter was also asked why, in his opinion, adaptations of Hollywood anime, like the infamous Dragonball Evolution, do not work. “We all wanted him to be good then” He regrets it and adds:

It’s difficult because anime is so rich with so many themes, animation allows you to do things that our technology, our cameras and cinema don’t allow us to do yet. When it comes to the commercial aspect, the people in the room are saying to themselves, “We’re going to adapt this license, we’re going to cast the actors, and it’s going to happen.” They still haven’t grasped the true essence of the themes and what makes anime anime.

For the actor/director, it is currently impossible to see good adaptations see the light of day, although recent technological advances are bringing us closer to the day when someone can find the right formula: “I think it takes a real fan, someone who really likes it, to make it really work (…) We have directors like James Cameron who are constantly changing things.”

Michael B. Jordan Video Club show in full:

Admitting that he’s not the best person to adapt an anime blockbuster, Michael B. Still, Jordan is confident in the chances of this new cinematic phenomenon seeing the light of day: “I think one day or the other, I don’t know when, somebody is going to get there and I want to be there to see it.”

Creed III with Michael B. Jordan hits theaters March 1.
